Overweight Help

A very common problem amongst dogs of all kinds is obesity. Not only is it hard on their joints, but it can cause harm to their organs as well. We all want our dogs to be happy and healthy, but overfeeding and lack of exercise can drastically shorten their lifespan.

When is a dog considered to be overweight?

The way we determine a healthy weight for your dog is by using a canine body condition score. You can look it up online and try it out on your dog! Ideally, they would have a thin layer of fat over their ribs, but easy to feel. They should also have a nice waist tuck behind their ribs, which should be visible from both the top and side.

Are some breeds prone to obesity?

All dogs can become obese when overfed, under-exercised, or both.

Why should my dog have a weight loss consultation at the hospital?

Your veterinarian can help with any weight management concerns you have about your dog. Drastic increase or decrease in weight can be indicative of many different illnesses and should be addressed as soon as possible.
